Mad Manhattan: A Mad Men Inspired Manhattan
Mad Men is one of my favorite TV shows. So much so, that I reference it time and again in my memoir, TALES OF INSOMNIA DESPAIR & THE PERFECT COCKTAIL (see BLOG entry for March 14, 2016 entitled The Don Draper). The show of course is about many things, not the least of which is the question of identity and the reinvention of oneself (themes that ring very true for me). And while not about drinking per se, the cocktail culture does play a prominent (and unabashed) role throughout the series. The main drinks featured in Mad Men are of course Don Draper's omnipresent glass of Rye and his go-to Old Fashioned, and Roger's martini and gimlet. But oddly, taking place in Manhattan, the drink of the same name never makes an appearance (at least I can't remember seeing it—there are almost a hundred episodes). So in the spirit of Mad Men, of their creativity let loose (as well as their appetites), I've created this new version of a "Manhattan" in its honor: The "Mad Manhattan".
MAD MANHATTAN 2 parts Bulleit Bourbon Whiskey ½ part Crème Yvette ½ part Vya Extra Dry Vermouth ¼ part Vya Sweet Vermouth ¼ part Campari* dash of Angostura bitters Stir in a shaker over ice. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a Maraschino cherry (or two) on a pick (optional). *You can substitute Cynar for the Campari.
If you stand back and squint, then the above looks like the Manhattan skyline!
I present to you, the "Mad Manhattan"... (And that's me there in my "Don Draper" suit!)
Two cherries look good!

As do Don and Roger!
Crème Yvette... YUM! (Thanks, Robert Cooper. 1976-2016. RIP)
