Mickey Mantle On Deck: A New Cocktail
As a break from political turmoil, I recall the pure thrill and beauty of sports, this realm where we push ourselves to the limits of human achievement through competition. The unadulterated spontaneity of sport has always been inspiring; of striving, of never giving up, of succeeding. Like baseball, where in the glorious pre-steroid days, a record was indeed a record (asterisks notwithstanding), and the amazing feats accomplished were even more amazing because of this utter spontaneity. Reggie Jackson’s three home runs on three consecutive pitches... Mickey Mantle’s titanic blasts.
I wax nostalgic for an age long gone (in which I wasn’t even born). The 1950s, the New York Yankees, and Number 7,
Mickey Mantle. An age of innocence in many ways, with baseball at the heart of it. “The National Pastime” was America’s most popular sport. Those “damn Yankees” were the perennial champs, and Mickey Mantle was its shining star. Mantle’s ferocity at the plate was legendary, as he tried to hit one out with every at bat. (And he did this over 500 times.) From 1951 to 1964, the Yankees and Mickey Mantle made twelve trips to the World Series (winning seven times), with Mantle the most feared of hitters. So much so, that the sight of him looming on deck struck dread into the heart of whomever was on the mound. Today’s new cocktail is inspired by this. (Curiously, all of its ingredients were available in the 1950s, at the height of the Yankees’ dominance.)
MICKEY MANTLE ON DECK 1½ parts Canadian Club Reserve Whisky 1 part Cynar ½ part Luxardo Amaro Abano* ¼ part Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur splash of Club Soda dash of Scrappy’s Cardamom bitters *can substitute Averna Stir over ice, then strain into a rocks glass. Garnish with a lemon peel.
