The other day I was off to the market to get my life-sustaining supplies: cornmeal and gun powder and hamhocks and guitar strings. But as I passed the produce aisle, I saw this display of "adorable" little kumquats. How could I resist! I had invented a kumquat cocktail five years ago called "The Vietnamese Orgasm" (which is in my book TALES OF INSOMNIA DESPAIR & THE PERFECT COCKTAIL), so it was high time for something new. And since I've been exploring martini variations of late, I saw visions of a kumquat martini dancing in my head.
When I arrived home, it was already complete in my mind, and now it was just a matter of assembling the ingredients and putting them together. And immediately upon taking that first sip, I exclaimed out loud, "F#@! this is good!" And that became the drink's name.
As fate would have it, my lovely assistant, Anna Child, happened to be in the neighborhood, and she popped by the Mixology Lab (my kitchen) to try out the new drink. The verdict was that it was indeed effing good. And
to top it off, the garnish is both edible and delicious, the kumquat's sweet peel balanced by the sour citrus taste of its flesh. And for the second round and the ultimate garnish, Anna suggested alternating a fresh raspberry with each fresh kumquat slice on the pick.
F#@! THIS IS GOOD!
1 part Veev Açaí Berry Spirit
1 part Stolichnaya Vodka
½ part Domaine de Canton
½ part fresh Kumquat juice
½ part Ocean Spray White Cranberry juice
dash of Hella Bitters Citrus bitters
Shake over ice. Fine strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
Garnish with two slices of fresh kumquat on a pick.
